Sara Blakely, inventor of Spanx slimming/smoothing women’s underwear and self-made billionaire, has been selected as the midlifebachelor.com Woman of the Month for April 2012!
Sara Blakely just appeared on the cover of Forbes magazine – as the youngest women EVER (at age 41) to make it onto their list of billionaires – and that is exactly how I noticed her. At age 29, she was looking for something flattering to wear underneath her white slacks. Â She wound up inventing a new line of shaping underwear which came to be known as “Spanx”. Â At the time, she invested her entire life savings of $5000 to start her company … and the rest is history. Â In her own words, “We can make the world a better place, one butt at a time.” – which is brilliant … I love it!
Here is what we know about Sara Blakely. Â She is originally from Florida, but moved to Atlanta in 2000 to start her company. Â She started off with nothing – and first found a contract manufacturer who was willing to help her out with her first production run of Spanx. Â She designed her own logo … filed her own patent … and then personally spent time taking her product to all of the retailers across America … anyone who would listen to her is who she marketed her product to. Â Her company and brand are now worth over $1B today – wow! Â In 2006, she created the Sara Blakely Foundation to help women through education and entrepreneurial training. Â She was also a contestant on The Rebel Billionaire, and starred as a judge on ABC’s reality TV series, American Inventor.
Unfortunately for us midlife bachelors, we have learned that in 2008, she married Jesse Itzler – and in 2009, she gave birth to their son, Lazer Blake Itzler. Â Not all marriages last forever – so perhaps there is still hope for us single men? Â Anyway, Sara is extremely hot in so many ways – we at midlifebachelor.com just love her, and wish her the best with everything!
Here is a very recent Forbes.com video of Sara Blakely discussing her business, her philosophy, and what has motivated her. Â The video will give you an excellent idea of how incredible a person she is …
